Where Can I Get Me Somea This?

by Kelley Gusich

Here is a message I got on Facebook, from a former student:

>>Hey! You probably don’t remember me — this is definitely a little out of the blue.
I was just working on a story when the B-52’s started playing. I suddenly had this vivid memory of a hip English teacher dressed up as a “Rock Lobster” for Halloween. You, right? I would have been the, uh, fairly talkative freshperson. Maybe bright blue hair? 2003 or 2004.
More than a decade later I write sci-fi, and it’s nice to run into you…

My father was one of those autodidactic learners — interested in school just for the sake of it. I think his final total for college credit was 325? But no degree. He just liked learning new stuff. When he was preparing to marry my mother, they had a discussion of their future. Bartending and waiting tables weren’t going to hack it anymore, especially since they wanted to have kids and my mom wanted to stay home with them. (This is the mid 1960’s, don’t forget. …

Poetry…right?!?!

Since I don’t subscribe to any newspapers, my friend was kind enough to send me this from Andrea Gabor. it’s long, but my post is at the end!

Amanda Gorman Showed Why Schools Should Teach Poetry

Verse has mostly been erased from the curriculum. After Inauguration Day, it should be easy to see why that’s a mistake.

Saturday morning I came downstairs, early, to find my oldest son on the couch watching Man of Steel.

Again.

MoS is one of those flicks in the cupboard under our tv that gets pulled out and re-watched frequently, like Zootopia or Big Hero 6. The Incredibles, too — until it got stepped on (the boys also leave things laying around, frequently. Imagine that…😜)

I don’t watch every repeat with them — I’m not so good at sitting down for two whole hours — but I’ll park my fanny for ten minutes here, five minutes there and reacquaint myself…

Kelley’s Konundrum: The Skin We Wear

I grew up in Western Colorado in the 70s and 80s. All summer I went to the pool at Tiara Rado; I got swim-suited and oiled up every day, and proceeded to DESTROY MY SKIN. I get the heebs thinking about it now, and when I look at the spots on my 50-year-old chest or the furrows on my forehead, I just think WHAT THE HELL!?!? What the hell were you thinking with the baby oil and the hundreds of hours in the sun?

Then I read this Medium article by Libby Jane Charleston:

How Can we Change, Really?

Things that have come to light this year show how difficult that is.

Do you guys Remember the Titans? Thats the movie my son chose for us the other night.

I’d seen it before, and I remember being SO SHOCKED to find out this Virginia school was first desegregated in 1971. 1971! I was alive in 1971, and my school education or my societal education was always presenting racism as a thing of the past, like, sure revolutionary war figures were slave owners, but look…

As I continued editing book 3 of my Shakespeare-loving-English-teacher-sleuths-cozy-mystery-series, I started thinking about William Shakespeare’s 456th birthday, which was his most recent. I always thought it was an interesting tidbit that he was born and he died on the same day: April 24th. I don’t wanna die on my birthday, unless it’s maybe my 110th birthday. But I sure would love it if my great-great-great-great grandchildren were celebrating me and my books 400ish years after I’m gone!

Anyway, in all this coronavirus craziness, I almost forgot. …

Aren’t We Already Socialists?

by Kelley

I had a strong reaction to this Medium article posted here by Jessica Wildfire. An empathetic reaction — my parents were LIFETIME republicans until Obama came along! But now my sister has taken the mantle of conservatism upon herself. I appreciated this piece because it expressed clearly what I have come to after YEARS of trying to understand the appeal of conservatism, political or spiritual/religious, beyond pure self-assistance, self-absorption, and focus on self self self.

I still haven’t found a conservative person who can explain it to me beyond that. And I’m trying…

Why my 8th Grade Son is the Best at Characterizing the Trump/Biden Debate

By Kelley

For one of his social studies assignments, happening in this weird homeschooling/Internet classroom of nightmares, my oldest son had to report on the first presidential debate of the 2020 election.

Being only a few weeks from my 51st birthday myself, I was excited to share this element of our democracy with the 14 year old, because, after all — come the 2024 election, he’ll have his own ballot.

Jesus.

My kid will be voting in the next election! …
